West Tofts

The small village of West Tofts is near to the town of Thetford and approximately 7 miles from Santon Downham. St Mary's Church is a large village church that was re-modelled in the 19th century by Pugin. Pugin has been called the foremost British architect of the 19th century. He had a penchant for Gothic architecture and turned St Mary's into a Gothic-style building, thanks to donations from the Sutton family of Lynford Hall. A transept forms a memorial chapel to Jane Mary Sutton, and a tomb recess on the outside of the chancel contains her husband Augustus, who paid for the work. The chapel is incredibly ornate with its wrought iron gate and highly carved walls and roof.
